6ft 2” Defender Set To Five Years Deal With Chelsea, Liverpool Left Frustrated

Opportunities for youngsters come at a premium at Chelsea. The Blues manager Jose Mourinho has never been one to place excessive faith in youth. For his entire managerial career, the Portuguese has preferred an experienced spine to all his teams. You would do well to find another club or manager in the league who gives fewer opportunities to the academy graduates.

Moreover, this Chelsea academy team are no mugs. FA Youth cup champions for successive years, they also won the League and UEFA Youth League titles this year to boot. Many have been earmarked for successful careers in the game. The only doubts linger about whether they will get such a chance at Stamford Bridge.

Therefore, when Mourinho is desperate to secure one such prospect’s future at the club, the lad has to be someone special. According to ESPN FC , such is the story of young Danish under-21 International Andreas Christensen, who is into the final year of his contract with his future hanging in the balance. Mourinho is keen to secure the defender’s long term future at the club, and Chelsea are prepared to offer him a new deal this summer.

The 19-year-old is highly regarded at the club and has offers from all over Europe, most notably from the German club Borrusia Monchengladbach. But Mourinho is willing to sanction the move only if the player first commits his future to the Blues ,as he has been identified by the Portuguese as the long term replacement for club captain John Terry.

Christensen impressed with his performances last month at the European under-21 championships and is considered one of the best young defenders in Europe. He has often been cited as the successor to Daniel Agger in the national setup and has long been mooted as Chelsea’s future in defense.

The young defender joined the Blues from Brondby in 2012 and has traversed through the club’s youth ranks before progressing into the first-team squad last season. After making his debut last October in the league cup against Bournemouth, he made his Premier League bow against Sunderland in the final league game of last season.

Christensen has a mature head on his young shoulders. Classy , elegant and good on the ball are some terms not generally associated with defenders , qualities which are reportedly present in ample in the young Dane. Chelsea fans will be hoping that the club can tie down the prodigious talent to a new deal as soon as possible and send him out on loan to gather some much needed experience.
