Brazilian Championship – 3rd Round Review

This weekend we had the third round of the Brazilian Championship. Of the 10 matches, we hit only 1 in our predictions. Sorry followers, but the favourite teams in the derbies didn’t win, and there was another surprise as Santos were defeated by Cruzeiro at home, and Atletico-MG only drew at home against Ponte Preta. Below is a summary of the main matches of the round:

Vasco 3-2 Fluminense

Fluminense were the favourites, even playing at Vasco’s stadium but Vasco went ahead through a goal by Luis Fabiano. After two controversial penalties, scored by Henrique Dourado, Fluminense turned the game on its head. At the end of the match, Vasco’s coach, Milton Mendes, put Manga Escobar and Nene on the team, and both changed the result in the additional time as Nene grabbed the winner for Vasco.

São Paulo 2-0 Palmeiras

In the Paulista derby, São Paulo defeated favourites Palmeiras. After a poor first half, São Paulo took the lead with a goal from Argentinian, Lucas Prato. Palmeiras tried to be more offensive, and got themselves a penalty kick, but Jean missed it. At the end of the game, in a counter attack, São Paulo scored another through Luiz Araujo, after another mistake by Fernando Prass in goal.

Atletico PR 1-1 Flamengo

After two matches of the Libertadores Cup, both teams played at Arena da Baixada (Atletico’s home). The home team started better in the attack, but Flamengo took the lead in the first half. In the second half the match changed, with more chances coming for Flamengo, but a goal of Atletico PR.

Atletico GO 0-1 Corinthians

The worst team of the championship faces the best team until now. Corinthians don’t play the best football, but they are efficient. They keep the same strategy that turned Corinthians state champion, playing with a strong defence and a fast counter attack.

Sport Recife 4-3 Gremio

In a seven goal thriller, Sport defeated a Gremio team that fielded a lot of youngsters who debuted in the Brazilian championship. The young boys of Gremio started very well with two goals, but with the experience of Sport shone through. Striker, Andre in an inspired afternoon, scored three goals to put Sport 4-1 up despite Gremio grabbing a late goal to make it 4-3 from a penalty.
