Chelsea and Liverpool target discussing Real Madrid contract

Both Liverpool and Chelsea have been linked with a move for Xabi Alonso over the past week, with Brendan Rodgers reportedly keen to bring him back to Anfield whilst Jose Mourinho is keen to be reunited with the player he managed at Real Madrid.

Alonso has less than a year remaining on his current deal which is set to expire in June 2014.

Ahead of the Copa del Rey final in May, which Real Madrid lost to Atlético Madrid, a meeting was held between Xabi Alonso’s agent, Iñaki Ibáñez, and Real Madrid CEO, José Ángel Sánchez. In this they discussed the preliminary details regarding the renewal of the player’s contract.

They arragned to meet again in September and it has been reported that they are keen to sign Alonso up on a further two year deal and a pay rise is expected.

Reports from Spain claim that Alonso is not interested in negotiating a deal with any other club and his primary focus right now is recovering from the groin operation he underwent on 8th June.
