Controversial past of Chelsea assistant Faria

Rui Faria had to be dragged away from Mike Dean during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at home to Sunderland today. Chelsea’s assistant manager, who has worked alongside Jose Mourinho since 2002 at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, is no stranger to these sort of outbursts though.

In October 2006, during the game which saw Petr Cech suffer a severe head injury after clashing with Stephen Hunt, Faria was sent off for arguing with Reading assistant manager Kevin Dillon.

The FA statement read: “Reading assistant manager Kevin Dillon and Chelsea fitness coach Rui Faria have also been reminded of their responsibilities following an incident in the technical area towards the end of the match.”

At Real Madrid, Faria was said to have been party to an altercation with Sporting Gijón manager Manuel Preciado after a match between the two clubs in November 2010. Marca reported that Preciado and Mourinho ran into one another after the match in the parking lot. Mourinho couldn’t restrain his urge to taunt his opponent, so he stuck his fingers up at him. Preciado then got in the face of Faria, who retorted that Sporting were going “a Segunda” – to the second division. Preciado then grabbed his genitals and threw a bottle at the Real Madrid team bus as it left the stadium. Apparently this bottle missed the bus and struck a bystander.

Also, in a 2005 Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern Munich where Mourinho was suspended for Chelsea, Faria was seen wearing a woolly hat and scratching his ear enough to elicit suspicions that Mourinho was covertly communicating with his fitness coach
