6ft 2in Goalkeeper May Join Liverpool As Mignolet Backup – Not Valdes

According to reports Liverpool are strongly interested in signing German goalkeeper Loris Karius. The 21 year old currently plies his trade with Bundesliga side Mainz. The goalkeeper has not yet signed a contract extension with his club, and his likely to leave on a free transfer next summer.

However, the reports claims that the former Manchester City youth prospects who left the Etihad two years ago for lack of playing opportunities is unlikely to accept any offer that the Anfield club would offer him because of the prospect of playing second fiddle to the Belgian Simon Mignolet.

The 6ft 2in goalkeeper has been recently scouted by Liverpool according to the reports, and contacts were believed to have been made with a view to signing him when his contract expires next summer.

The former Manchester City youth goalkeeper was once with the Academy at Bundesliga club Stuttgart before spending a couple of years in England after which he left in 2012. He has since gone to make over 30 league appearances for Mainz since he joined them as a 19 year old two years ago.

Liverpool have recently been linked to several goalkeepers following concerns over the indifferent form of first choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The Belgian has struggled for form this season as he has inevitably drawn criticism from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher for his poor displays this season.

Victor Valdes is the other goalkeeper that has also been linked to Anfield in recent weeks. Having spent an outlay of over a £110 million this summer, it seems the Anfield hierarchy is looking to bring recruitment in the goalkeeping department that would be on a free transfer. Victor Valdes is currently a free agent, and would have long been snatched if not for concerns over the knee ligament injury he suffered last season while still with Barcelona, while Loris Karius’ contract expires next summer, and Liverpool are seeking a way to secure his services on a free transfer next summer by reaching a pre contract agreement with the Germany Under-21 international in January.

The coast remains unclear in respect of this transfer as a lot depends on the continuous form of Simon Mignolet. So far he has shown remarkable fitness ability, and seldom succumbs to injuries or suspensions, besides his form, Brendan Rodgers seldom gives other goalkeepers game time even in cup games which might negate the possibility of signing Loris Karius.
