Almost Done – Manchester United Reach Agreement To Sign World Cup Winner

Reports surfacing in the Metro have sensationally claimed that Premier League giants Manchester United have finally agreed a deal with want-away Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos for his transfer to Old Trafford. The publication has reported that the 29-year-old Spanish International has agreed personal terms over a five-year deal with the Old Trafford outfit which could see him earn a staggering £39 million over the length of the contract.

The versatile defender, who can play both in the central defence as well as the right back spot, had been a top target for Louis Van Gaal since reports had emerged in the Spanish press highlighting his discontentment with life at the Santiago Bernabeu. The defender has been one of the most important players in the Los Blancos setup since joining from Sevilla a decade ago and has made almost 450 appearances for the club. However, he had grown agitated as his contract did not reflect his status as one of the pillars of the first team.

Given that non performers like Sami Khedira were earning the same as him , and players of similar ilk in the form of Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale were earning about twice and thrice that amount respectively, Ramos wanted a better deal from the club. However, with such a deal not forthcoming , Ramos had allegedly rejected an extension offered by president Florentino Perez.

With two years left on his current deal, it presented Manchester United, who were already on the lookout for a top class defender after their travails of last season, with an opportunity to swoop in and get him at a cheap. An initial bid of €40 million was rejected by the Los Blancos , while United remained adamant that any deal for David De Gea would only be completed if Ramos was allowed to go the other way round. However, it now seems a conclusion to this fascinating saga is in sight.

These reports come after Ramos reportedly told Cuatro over the weekend :

“I’m not negotiating with anyone.”

No formal announcement has yet been made by either of the two clubs , but that won’t stop United fans from fantasizing about one of the best defenders in the world donning their club’s jersey next season.
