Antoine Griezmann To Join Chelsea, Terms Agreed, Medical Imminent

Shocking news in the Spanish media this evening have it that Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann in a deal said to be for £42.5 million. Many had thought Chelsea have no chance of signing the player any more after his release clause was reportedly upped to €60 million from the about €46 million it initially was.

Reports now claim Abramovich has released funds for the playe and will become a Blue as early as Monday morning. Personally I would not be surprised if this report is in any way true. Griezmann has constantly been linked to Chelsea in the last few weeks and as they say, there is usually no smoke without fire.

It was initially thought Chelsea will try to do a swap deal that involves Luis Filipe going the other way. Although Filipe has since joined Atletic but it was not a swap deal but rather outright cash deal. Also, in July, it was reported that technical director Michael Enemalo had flown to Spain to discuss with the La liga side.

Although playing as a second striker behind Mario Manduzkic, Griezmann scored 27 goals and created 6 assists in all competition last season. Should he join Chelsea, he will offer the must needed option in attack especially considering the fact that the trio of Remy, Costa and Falcao are injury prone.

Should the reports be true, it will further put the future of Willian and Oscar with Chelsea in doubt. Willian in particular has been linked with a move away from the club in the last one week and the reports of Griezmann being on the way will further add fuel to the speculations regarding the Brazilian’s future.
