It is no secret that Arsenal have held a long standing interest in Real Madrid Striker Karim Benzema. Arsene Wenger tried to sign him while he was at Lyon , and again when he was playing second fiddle to Gonzalo Higuain at the Santiago Bernabeu. He was thwarted both by luck and Benzema’s desire to carve out a successful career at Los Blancos. However, it looks as though the Gunners boss might finally have his chance this summer amid reports that Real are willing to offload the Frenchman this summer and have set their sights on securing the services of Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.
New Real boss Rafa Benitez has reportedly made the Argentine striker his top transfer target this summer and that has allegedly paved the way for Arsenal to pursue their long standing interest in Benzema. The Real Madrid man currently earns £150,000-a-week and would reportedly cost a fee in the region of £25 million. Arsenal need a striker of the highest caliber to supplement an already brilliant midfield and a solid back line. In Benzema, they are sure to get a world class striker with European pedigree to lead the line. Present forwards Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck were often seen as weak links in a team that finished third last season and won the FA cup.
Benzema would surely be an upgrade on the aforementioned duo and Arsenal fans will be excited by the prospect of him linking up with the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.Manchester United’s interest in the Frenchman has also been well documented over the years and Arsenal will look to trump their Premier League rivals for the signature of the wily French striker, who fired in 22 goals in 45 appearances for Real Madrid last season.
