Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the club is closing on signing a new deal with left-back Nacho Monreal. The proposed new deal is expected to tie up the player with the Gunners till 2019.
“We’ll announce that at some stage, when it’s finished. It’s not over the line completely, but we’re not far,” he said when asked about the deal in his press conference.
“The regularity of his performances, the fact that he has improved every year since he has arrived. He’s not necessarily my first-choice left back. He plays more than Kieran Gibbs at the moment, but I think I am a bit spoiled there.”
“Gibbs has come back and he has shown again on Saturday a very, very strong level. That makes my decisions at that level very difficult. But overall, Nacho Monreal has been absolutely outstanding.”
The Gunners have acted swiftly to ward off the interest of Athletic Bilbao in their player. The La Liga club unsuccessfully tried to sign Monreal in the summer.
He arrived at Emirates Stadium from Malaga in 2013, and he has established himself as the first-choice left back under Wenger during the past two seasons. He has featured in all league games for the Gunners this season.
