It is no longer a secret that only two English clubs were interested in signing French midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton this summer before one of the clubs pulled out of the race, according to various media sources. This piece of news meant only the Red Devils were effectively left in the race to sign the 25-year old, with personal terms believed to have been ratified by parties involved.
However, recent update from Germany has confirmed that the Red Devils have struck a deal to sign Bayern and Germany international midfielder, Bastian Schweinsteiger.
The 30-year old midfielder, who has 111 international caps for Germany, and spent the last 13 years with Bayern Munich is now set to move to the Old Trafford in the next couple of weeks. Schweinsteiger is United’s first choice midfield signing, ahead of Schneiderlin, if reports in the press are to be believed.
What this means is that Arsenal could now return for Schneiderlin; a player they have been scouting for the past two transfer windows. Though, United have not officially ended their interest in the highly rated Frenchman, the fact that Schweinsteiger was the club’s first choice signing could all-but end their pursuit of the Southampton man; thereby leaving the Gunners as the only club in the race to sign the player.
This could also force the hands of Southampton, as the club has all along refused to back down on their asking price for the French international, who was a part of his country’s contingent to the last World Cup held in Brazil in 2014.
While we await further news to unfold per United’s interest in Schneiderlin, it might be safe to assume that the Gunners are back in the race to sign the 25-year old Frenchman.
