Chelsea are on the verge of wrapping up a 22.9 million pounds move for Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel, according to the Metro. The Belgian has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for some time now and it now looks like the Blues are closing in on their man.
Axel Witsel’s former agent and close friend revealed that the Belgian International star has been in contact with Chelsea over a deal to move to the Bridge.
AC Milan were also said to be in the race for the Zenit midfielder, but it now looks like Chelsea are leading the race to sign the midfielder. Mourinho is looking to add depth to his option in midfield and they are closing in on the Zenit midfielder.
Report even had it that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is believed to have flown out to Russia to help hasten the deal as he is said to be friends with Alexander Valeryevich, who owns the Russian Champions.
Witsel is a dynamic midfielder, and Jose Mourinho has seen him as a replacement for John Obi Mikel whose future looks uncertain at the club.
The former Benfica player was a standout performer in the Russian league for Zenit as they went on to lift the title. Axel Witsel boasted an impressive 88% pass accuracy for Zenit and he won 54% of his duels in the league last season.
He will become the Blues’ third signing of the summer following the acquisition of Radamel Falcao and Asmir Begovic.
