Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho may have suffered a huge setback in his move to sign Aston Villa and Belgium talisman, Christian Benteke. Unofficial reports state that the player, who is also wanted by Manchester United, is set to undergo a medical at Liverpool today, after the Anfield giants allegedly recently activated his £32.5 million release clause.
The burly striker scored over a dozen goals in Villa colours last term despite an injury layoff, and has attracted interest from all corners of England. Following the departure of club legend Didier Drogba from Chelsea at the end of last season, Mourinho reportedly started the search for a proven goal-machine and eventually listed Benteke as his prime target to fill the void and compete with Diego Costa for a starting berth.
To his dismay, however, Liverpool, look to have it all wrapped up- greatly aided by the record sale of star winger Raheem Sterling. The anfield side have reportedly activated his release clause, and would announce his arrival any time soon.
This development would certainly come as bad news to Mourinho, who it appears has lost out on an opportunity to sign a proven top-striker, and may have to settle for secondary options, which may not have as immediate an impact as a player of Benteke’s quality.
