Clyne On Brink Of Anfield Switch As Medical Scheduled For Later Today

Liverpool are all set to treat their fans with their sixth new signing of this transfer window in the form of Nathaniel Clyne , who is expected to undergo a medical at the club’s Melwood training base later today , before a formal announcement of the deal.

The 24-year-old is expected to sign a five-year contract , after Liverpool agreed a deal worth £12.5 million with Southampton last week for the services of the  England International. There are expected to be several add-on payments, depending on the player’s performances for his new club.

Clyne had just a single year to run on his current deal at Southampton and had made it clear to the Saints’ hierarchy that he would not sign an extension. Southampton, for their part, have already signed a replacement in Cedric Soares.Liverpool had bid £10 million for his services earlier in the summer but that bid had been rejected as Southampton were believed to be holding on for more.

The Reds have reportedly beaten interest from their fierce rivals Manchester United to lure Clyne to Anfield, who had a superb season for Southampton as part of the team that had the second best defensive record in the league. His record of 74 successful tackles last season was way better than any Liverpool player, who had Emre Can leading the list with 66.

Securing a new right back was a top priority for Brendan Rodgers this summer, after it became clear that Glen Johnson would leave the club as a free agent with Javier Manquillo failing to nail down a regular starting spot and Jon Flanagan the victim of long-term injury.

Clyne will be expected to nail down a spot in the team for several years, and many in the Anfield Corridors believe that the Reds have landed a bargain at just £12.5 million.
