Deal Agreed, Chelsea Target To Complete Manchester United Move In January

With Memphis Depay struggling to hit form and fit into the pace and rigors of the Premier League after a summer move from PSV, reports are emerging of Manchester United’s foray into the transfer market as they look to snap up Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica. United were linked with the Argentine winger all summer and it was believed that the club had agreed a deal with Benfica before opting out of the deal and eventually signing Memphis Depay.

Spanish media are claiming United will bid for him in the January transfer window and there is all likelihood that he could make the switch given his refusal to extend his contract. If true, then United are sure to get him on a cheap and the belief that he could slot seamlessly into life in the Premier League will have certainly informed this decision by United. Should Gaitan make the move, Depay will be forced to make room for the Argentine unless there is a change in form.

The Dutch man whose capture by United was hailed by many might eventually go the way of Angel Di Maria, who lasted just a season at Old Trafford before being shipped out to PSG after a dismal season, but there are arguments in different quarters asking that he be given more time to prove himself.

While that might sound a good idea, manager Louis Van Gaal’s decision to drop him for the last three matches might be justified. Depay must take it upon himself to come back stronger from being dropped and prove to United fans, his manager and the world that he isn’t a one season wonder.
