Rumours linking players with transfers to clubs have continued albeit the transfer window is closed. And with the January window drawing nearer, transfer stories are beginning to intensify.
The latest this time around is about Chelsea, who are scouring Europe already for suitable january transfer targets who can help reignite their season. The Blues’ are nothing short of beleaguered this term, having lost 6 out of their 11 Premier League games and conceding 22 goals in the process. They are currently mired in 15th place and their title defence is nothing but over.
Now, there are claims Chelsea are plotting a January transfer raid on New York Red Bulls for centre-back Matt Miazga.
It is understood the West London club have already submitted an undisclosed offer for the defender, who they see as captain John Terry’s replacement – with the 34-year old’s career dwindling.
Meanwhile, the likes of Leicester and Stoke have also paid court to Maizga, as per reports, but it is believed Chelsea have the ability to gazump the duo to land the highly-rated American defender. Nonetheless, the 20-year old thinks he needs to continue his development in the United States for now, but failed to rule out a future move to any European side.
“The ultimate goal is to play on the highest level, but right now I’m happy in New York,” Maizga said.
“I can grow here and become a better player. When the time comes – I will be ready for Europe.”
On interest in playing in the English Premier League, the NYRB defender said: “The EPL is a very intriguing proposition.
“I love that league – it’s very competitive and there’s a lot of passion involved. Hopefully one day I will have an opportunity to play there. I believe my skillset fits the way football is played there.”
Maizga is also an aerial threat, just like Terry, and good with the foot too. At just 20, he possesses leadership skills both on and off the pitch and has the ability to initiate attacks from the defence.
Signing Maizga would be a wise decision by Chelsea as the 20-year old will be able to learn more from Terry, considering the retired England international will still be at Stamford Bridge at least for one more season.
