Done Deal – High Rated Defender Sign Man City Deal – Future Looking Bright?

Recently, the news broke that Tosin Adarabioyo, has signed his first professional contract with Man City. He is a product of their academy having joined from age six.  The 17 year old defender who is of Nigerian descent has  already represented England in the under 16-18 grade. This is great news for fans as their joy has always been to see a star rise through the ranks and be a club legend.

Clubs like Man Utd, Arsenal, Southampton, Tottenham have all prided themselves on the products of their academy, with them churning out the likes of Bale, Luke Shaw, Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, Wilshere, Oxlade, Kyle Walker etc. These names are a regular face in their teams line up every week except of course for Bale, but the point being driven out is that they passed through the ranks and file of the academy to reach the pinnacle of their career and fans can take great joy in knowing that these boys were all locals and understand the principles of the club and feel the passion that the fans feel.

City was once a nesting ground for talents and their academy produced the likes of Micah Richards, Joey Barton, Nedum Onuoha, Shaun Wright Philips etc. However talents seemed to dry up after the takeover by Sheikh Mansuor, as the focus was on acquiring readymade talents the world over. The likes of,  Robinho, Tevez, the Toures. Balotelli, Silva, Aguero were signed from different clubs and form the crux of the team responsible for the club’s on pitch success. However the club owners also saw the need for them to nurture their own talents and thus the EDS (Elite Development Squad) was formed, with Patrick Vieria in charge of nurturing the numerous youngsters who all want to make a name in the football world.

To achieve the aim of having the best talents graduating from its academy, City took to acquiring youths with potentials not just from its environs, but all over the world. Using extensive scouting network, they snapped up the likes of Jose Pozo from Real Madrrid, Marcos Lopes, Bruno Zucculini, Seiko Fofana,Thierry Ambrose, and most recently Kelechi Ihenacho. Also the academy itself has homegrown youngsters like Tosin Adarabioyo, Greg Leigh, Jason Denayer, Shay Facey, Devante Cole, Alex Nimely who are all earning rave reviews and can hold theirs against their foreign team players.

The future has never looked brighter, with these academy products all gearing to take their place in the first team and lead the club to more glory. Already, Marcos lopes is on loan at Lille and has impressed. He started two or three matches for the first team last season and was exceptional. It is expected that his loan will allow him gain more experience before he is promoted into the first team next season. Jose Pozo is also another prospect. He scored on his debut against Sheffield Wednesday and was named on the bench in the league match against Hull City. Bruno Zucculini is on loan at Valencia and big things are expected from him. Seiko Fofana who has been compared to Yaya Toure is also lighting up the EDS squad with his performances so far, and Devante Cole is also another player to watch out for.

In conclusion, City has taken pains to ensure that their academy produces top of the notch talent, and this is shown through the recent construction of sports complex. Soon, the talents who are nutured in their academy will pick up the mantle and contribute in their own quota to bring glory to the club, because with investing in young and raw talents, the club can never go wrong as they will be competing with the likes of Barcelona, whose academy has produced world class players like Messi. Which Man City fan wouldn’t want to see the next Lionel Messi emerge from the EDS?
