Done & Dusted – Arsenal Complete 6th Most EXPENSIVE Signing In Club History

Arsenal have made a big coup in signing Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.  Arsenal have managed to pull off the coup to adequately cover that position and in the same breath give Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina competition for the number one shirt. The deal is valued at £11million.

The surprise though is that Chelsea allowed him to go and not just anywhere, but to arch rivals arsenal. For a goalkeeper who is 33, £11million might sound like a good deal for Chelsea, but the underlying effect is that Chelsea just turned Arsenal into serious title contenders.

Cech had been loyal to the Chelsea cause for many years and through thick and thin has delivered. The arrival of Thibaut Courtois last season meant that he had to spend most of his time on the bench. Without a hope of displacing the young goalkeeper in the horizon, he opted to leave to get more playing opportunities. For Chelsea, it may have been a helpless situation in which they couldn’t guarantee him regular playing time, it would have been better to ship him off to Europe.

The £11million figure will make Cech Arsenal’s sixth most expensive goalkeeper in their history. What would hurt Chelsea, especially Mourinho the most is; he left against their wishes. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he doesn’t get the kind of applause Lampard did when he returned to Stamford Bridge.
