Egypt’s Al Ahly have won the most silverware in the history of football

Some football clubs have an excellent habit of winning silverware, achieving unbelievable success. However, which football clubs have won the most trophies in the history of football?

Al Ahly (Egypt, 124 trophies won)

While many European clubs have enjoyed trophy-laden history, there are no clubs that can compete with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who are the undisputed kings of their domestic game.

The Red Devils have won an impressive 44 Egyptian Premier League titles, the Egyptian Cup 39 times and the CAF Champions League on 12 occasions. At the time of writing, the Al Ahly are the current holders of the latter. They are also the current reigning Egyptian champions.

Club Nacional (Uruguay, 117 trophies won)

Club Nacional are the second most successful club in the history of club football when it comes to winning silverware. Despite winning the Uruguayan top-flight title on 49 occasions, they are still lagging behind their arch-rivals Penarol in terms of the domestic titles.

The Tricolor won the Copa Libertadores on three occasions in 1971, 1980 and 1988, while also winning the now-defunct Copa Interamericana twice in 1971 and 1988. They have also won the Intercontinental Cup in 1971, 1980 and 1988.

Rangers (Scotland, 117 trophies won)

The Glasgow outfit is the joint-most successful club in the history of the game. The club was founded in 1872, and despite some major ups and downs throughout their history, they have enjoyed significant success.

Rangers have claimed the Scottish top-flight title on 55 occasions, the Scottish Cup 34 times, and the League Cup on 28 occasions. They are current holders of the latter.

The Scottish giants’ record is impressive despite the fact that they have won just one European trophy, which came in the 1971/72 season when they lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

They also finished as runners-up in the competition in seasons 1960/61 and 1966/67 while also finishing as runners-up in the UEFA Cup/Europa League in seasons 2007–08 and 2021–22.

Celtic (Scotland, 116 trophies won)

Celtic are only one trophy behind arch-rivals, Rangers, when it comes to both overall trophies and domestic titles.

The Hoops have won a domestic double on a record 13 occasions, as they have also won the Scottish Cup a record 42 times, having also lifted the Scottish League Cup on 21 occasions.

However, arguably, Celtic’s most famous triumph was in the European Cup in 1967, when the Hoops recorded a 2-1 win over Inter Milan in the final of the competition in Lisbon.

The victory made history as the Hoops were the first British club to win the European Cup. All of the ‘Lions of Lisbon’ were born within 30 miles of Parkhead.

Penarol (Uruguay, 111 trophies won)

Founded in 1891, Penarol has never dropped out of the Uruguayan top flight, the only club ever to achieve the feat. They are the most successful club in the history of the Primera Division, having won an incredible 51 league titles.

Penarol has also been successful in the continental game, winning the Copa Libertadores five times and the Intercontinental Cups on three occasions.

Incredibly, all of Uruguay’s World Cup-winning have contained at least one player from Penarol.

Real Madrid (Spain, 109 trophies won)

Los Blancos are not just one the biggest institutions in the world but also one of the most successful in terms of silverware won throughout their glorious history.

The men from Madrid have won more La Liga titles than any other club in history, having won the domestic title on 36 occasions. They have also lifted the Copa del Rey 20 times and the Supercopa de Espana on 13 occasions.

However, arguably, Real Madrid’s most significant achievement in their history is winning the Champions League on 15 occasions, which makes them the most successful club in the history of European football’s elite competition.

Barcelona (Spain, 99 trophies won)

The Catalan giants lag behind their eternal rivals, Real Madrid, having won ten fewer trophies than Los Blancos. However, the Blaugrana’s silverware haul is still impressive.

They have won 27 Spanish top-flight titles, having also won the Copa del Rey 31 times, both tallies only bettered by their arch-rivals.

On the European front, Barcelona have won the Champions League on five occasions while winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup four times. They have also won the FIFA Club World Cup on three occasions in 2009, 2011 and 2015.

Benfica (Portugal, 85 trophies won)

The Eagles are the most successful club in Portugal, winning 38 Primeira Liga titles, 26 Taca de Portugal’s and seven Taça da Liga’s, which are all domestic records in the respective competitions.

Benfica have also enjoyed success in Europe, winning the European Cup on two occasions in seasons 1960/61 and 1961/62.

The 1962 final is considered to be one of the best ever in the competition, as superstar Eusebio scored a brace in a 5-3 victory over Real Madrid, with another legend, Ferenc Puskas, also scoring a hat-trick for Los Blancos.

Porto (Portugal, 84 trophies won)

The Dragons trail their big arch-rivals Benfica by just one trophy in the history of the two clubs. Porto’s 30 Primeira Liga titles are still impressive, as are 20 Taca de Portugal titles. Only Benfica have won the two competitions on more occasions than Porto.

Like their rivals, Porto have enjoyed success in European competitions. The Dragons have won the European Cup/Champions League and the UEFA Cup/Europa League on two occasions apiece.

In 1987, Porto won their only UEFA Super Cup, recording a 2-0 victory over Dutch giants Ajax.

Al-Faisaly (84 trophies won)

The Blue Eagle was founded in 1932 as a sports club. However, due to a lack of funds, the club became focused solely on football. It turned out to be an inspired decision.

The club is now the undisputed dominant force of the Jordanian game, having won 81 domestic trophies in their history. Included in that trophy haul are 35 domestic league titles, 21 Jordan FA Cups and 17 domestic Super Cups.
