NAC snatch draw in Tilburg

Willem II drew 1-1 with NAC Breda on Friday in a relegation battle. In-form striker Bartholomew Ogbeche scored in a goalmouth scrap to put Willem II up before halftime to continue his goal-scoring streak. After halftime, Willem II’s Pedro Chirivella botched a clearance from a cross, and NAC striker Thierry Ambrose was present to capitalise on the mistake. Both sides will feel hard done to not get a win, but probably relieved to see their foes fail to do the same.

Heerenveen drop points against VVV

SC Heerenveen once again failed to pick up a win against a weaker side in VVV-Venlo this weekend. VVV’s Lennart Thy scored a fantastic goal on the counter in the tenth minute – after being unleashed by Clint Leemans’ through ball, the German cut inside and scored to give the away side a surprise lead. Heerenveen fought back immediately, as Denzel Dumfries’ looping header from a Stijn Schaars free kick found its way past Lars Unnerstall and into the net nine minutes later.

After halftime, Heerenveen striker Henk Veerman’s left footed shot snuck into the net as the home side completed the mini-comeback. With only minutes remaining, VVV’s Vito van Crooij took a tame long-shot, but it was flicked into the net by teammate Ralf Seuntjens. VVV held on for a dramatic draw as Heerenveen once again fail to impress.

Second half onslaught sees AZ past Heracles

Heracles Almelo visited second-place AZ Alkmaar on Saturday probably expecting a loss, but by halftime the score was still drawn 0-0. AZ picked up the pace after the break, and Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s cross was turned in for an own-goal by Heracles ‘keeper Bram Castro. In the 75th minute, young midfielder Guus Til turned in AZ’s second goal before Jahanbakhsh scored a left-footed effort on the counter minutes later.

Wout Weghorst scored the fourth goal after a defensive error by Heracles in the 85th minute, and defender Jonas Svensson found himself in space to score the fifth before the full-time whistle blew.

Zwolle skip past Excelsior

PEC Zwolle continued their fight at the top of the table with a comeback victory over hosts Excelsior Rotterdam. A goalless first half morphed into a fantastically exciting second half – Excelsior’s Mike van Duinen scored a penalty just minutes after the kick-off. However, Zwolle came right back and equalised a minute later. Ryan Thomas’ cross found its way to the far post, where Mustafa Samyak easily tapped the ball across the line. In the 65th minute, Zwolle’s Younes Namli struck a brilliant free kick into the top corner, and Zwolle were able to hold on for a crucial away victory.

ADO Den Haag win crazy match at Twente

FC Twente and ADO Den Haag clashed in a battle of two under-performing clubs, but the latter ended out on top. In the 12th minute, Tom Boere found himself in space on the break and cut the ball back to give Danny Holla an easy finish. Five minutes later, Abdenasser El Khayati scored an equaliser after some great back-and-forth ball pinging by Den Haag in the box. It only took another four minutes for ADO to get score the go-ahead goal. El Khayati sent a magnificent cross into the box, where Bjorn Johnsen’s flick bounced in off the bar.

However, before halftime Twente managed to snag an equaliser. Holla got his brace by scoring a fantastic free kick from a difficult angle on the left flank. Both sides pushed for a winner in the second half, and the winner came through Player of the Week Abdenasser El Khayati. A horrible set of defensive errors by Twente led to El Khayati dribbling and scoring in the 90th minute. What a great match!

Zondag

Due to the snowy weather conditions on Sunday, two matches in the Eredivisie had to be postponed to a later date. FC Utrecht were due to host Feyenoord while Sparta Rotterdam faced off against Vitesse, but both matches were called off. They will be rescheduled and played at a later date. Fortunately for us, two of Sunday’s matches were able to be played.

Roda achieve point against Groningen

It was a snow-covered pitch in Kerkrade, but the match was deemed playable. In the first half, Roda JC took the game to visitors Groningen. Simon Gustafson tapped in the first goal in the 14th minute, as a rebound fell out of Sergio Padt’s reach in the snow. The match was stopped for a short period of time to allow for the snow to be cleared, but Groningen’s defensive struggles continued even without the white cover. Gustafson stole the ball high up the pitch and lobbed the ‘keeper from range to send Roda up 2-0.

Groningen were given a lifeline in the 37th minute as Jesper Drost’s cross across the box found a lurking Tom van Weert for the away side’s first goal. In the 58th minute, Roda’s Adil Auassar conceded a penalty and was sent off. Van Weert scored the equalising goal – a score that held until full time.

Ajax dominate PSV in De Topper

A huge match between top-of-the-league PSV Eindhoven and AFC Ajax ended much in the favor of the Amsterdam-based hosts. 10-points clear of Ajax coming to the Johan Cruijff Arena, PSV did not look like a side that has been playing superbly this season. After a first half in which Ajax missed a few good chances, David Neres struck a long shot into the bottom corner in the 61st minute.

Three minutes later, Lasse Schøne made quick work of the PSV defense by dribbling past multiple tackles and firing a long-shot into the net. Ajax finished off the match in the 72nd minute – David Neres found Donny van de Beek in the box and the Dutch midfielder scored a left-footed shot off the post and in. A great Ajax performance sees PSV’s 10-point advantage slimmed down to 7.
