Everton FC Famous Songs and Chants: ‘Z Cars’ To ‘Here We Go’

Everton are one of the most historic football clubs in the history of the English. The Toffees have spent more seasons in the English top flight than any other club, missing just four top-flight campaigns since the league was first established in 1888.

One of Everton’s biggest assets throughout the years has always been the club’s passionate fanbase. In recent years, the fans have helped drag the team through some desperate situations with their fervent backing, banners and especially their passionate singing.

When it comes to the Merseyside giants, there are certain songs and chants that fans love at Everton. Here are some of the most popular Toffees songs:

Z Cars

This is the song that the Everton players come out onto the pitch to. The song was the theme tune to a 1960s local-based police programme called ‘Z Cars’. However, it was initially a folk tune called Johnny Carey. The tune was re-arranged by Fritz Spiegl and performed by John Keating and his Orchestra.

That was the version that was on Z Cars, the television show, and reached number five in the charts in 1962. Z Cars has welcomed the Everton players onto the Goodison Park pitch since 1962 and will no doubt welcome the Toffees onto the pitch at their new dockside home at Bramley Moore next season.

In recent years, the club has added a siren before playing Z Cars, which is likely to add to the excitement before the players enter the pitch.

Grand Old Team

The traditional anthem of Scottish giants Celtic, Everton reportedly adopted the song in season 1983/84, although some fans say it was sung earlier than that by Everton fans. It is part of the medley of songs that are played prior to kick-off at Goodison Park.

It was the song played over the tannoy after victories for many years until that changed in recent years. It is still a highly popular song amongst the majority of fans, despite being usurped by another song as the fan’s new go-to song, which we will get to later on.

Lyrics:

And it’s a Grand Old Team to play for,
And it’s a Grand Old team to support,
And if you know your history,
It’s enough to make your heart go worrrrrrrrr,
We don’t care what the Red sh*te say,
What the f*ck do we care?
Because we always know,
That there’s gonna be a show,
When the Everton boys are there!
Everton, Everton, Everton, Everton

Spirit of the Blues

Arguably, the most popular Everton song among the fans is Spirit of the Blues. The song was initially released ahead of the 1984 FA Cup final against Watford at Wembley, a game the Toffees won 2-0.

The song never really gained popularity until September 2020. A meme containing footage from a Coldplay song and some chimpanzees dancing around went viral with the music playing in the background, with text saying, “We’re actually signing James, Allan and Doucoure”

The post caused quite a steer. The Toffees started the campaign in spectacular fashion, and Spirit of the Blues went to number one in the download charts, knocking USA singing star Miley Cyrus off the top of the charts.

The song has become a symbol of defiance and optimism among the club’s supporters. On matchdays, it is played just before Z Cars, sometimes even twice. It is also sung during games, especially when things are going the team’s way.

The song hasn’t just proven popular with Everton fans, though, as some opposition fans have even confessed to singing along to the song because it is so catchy.

Lyrics

It’s good news for the blues,
And there’s no more time to lose,
Cos we’re hot on the trail,
And there’s no way we’re gonna fail,
So get your coat on and get moving,
Cos we don’t know the meaning of losing,
So come on come on,
Get down to Goodison Park,
Wooooo.

Everton, we never shone so brightly,
Everton, the spirit of the blues,
Everton, we never shone so brightly,
Everton, the spirit of the blues.

We’re on the move,
Cos we’ve got something to prove,
It’s no surprise the blue boys are on the rise,
So get your coat on and get moving,
Cos we don’t know the meaning of losing,
So come on, come on,
Get down to Goodison Park,
Wooooo.

Everton, we never shone so brightly,
Everton, the spirit of the Blues,
Everton, we never shone so brightly,
Everton, the spirit of the blues,
Everton, we never shone so brightly,
Everton, the spirit of the blues,
Everton, we never shone so brightly,
Everton, the spirit of the blues,
Everton, we never shone so brightly,
Everton, the spirit of the blues,
Everton, we never shone so brightly,
Everton, the spirit of the blues…

Forever Everton

The song was released for the 1986 FA Cup final against Liverpool. It is played before kick-off, and fans also sing it during games. Although it was released in 1986, some suggest its origins date back to the 1970s.

It is also played just before kick-off after the team handshakes and the players have moved into their positions for the start of the game.

Lyrics

Everton, Everton,
We’re Forever Everton,
All for one,
One for all,
Everton’s the team that plays beautiful football

We’re the kings of Goodison,
We play in Royal Blue,
On the ball the Toffeemen,
Will play it sweet for you,
We play it on the carpet,
We play it in the air,
Whichever way we play it,
We play it fair and square

Everton, Everton,
We’re Forever Everton,
One for all,
All for one,
Evertons the team that plays beautiful football…

The story that is Everton,
From the days of Dixie Dean,
The story we will carry on,
The glory of our team,
In every land and continent,
Wherever football goes,
Well play the game that’s Everton,
And bring the honours home…

Everton, Everton,
We’re forever Everton,
All for one,
One for all,
Everton’s the team that plays beautiful football…

Altogether Now

This is another song that is played just prior to kick-off at Goodison Park. The song is a reworking of the old Farm Altogether Now song. The band, who are from Liverpool, reworked the song with Everton-related lyrics ahead of the Toffees 1995 FA Cup final against Manchester United.

Lead singer Peter Hooton and lead guitarist Keith Mullin are Evertonians, so the band were obviously delighted to help the club release the FA Cup record. The single reached number 24 in the UK charts.

Around the time of the FA Cup final, this song was highly popular. However, with time, arguably, its popularity has faded, although the video containing video footage of their 4-1 FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham at Elland Road still brings back great memories for many Evertonians.

Here We Go

This much-loved Everton song was the team’s FA Cup final song in 1985 when they faced Manchester United at Wembley. Despite a 1-0 defeat against the Red Devils, fans still love the song, and it is played at Goodison and sung with great delight by the Everton fans.

It was actually an adaption of the Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa, and other clubs, including Nottingham Forest, have also used the song.

Lyrics

Here we go,
Here we go,
Here we go,
Everton is the best we all know,
We’re the team, we’re supreme, number 1,
And we love you,
Everton

60 grand 60 grand Seamus Coleman

The song is a tribute to club stalwart and captain, Republic of Ireland international Seamus Coleman, who has spent a decade and a half with the club after his move from Sligo Rovers for just £60,000 in January 2009.

With his contract running out at the end of the season, Coleman may well hang up his boots this summer. However, Evertonians will always fondly remember him.

Lyrics

60 grand, 60 grand, Seamus Coleman,
60 grand, 60 grand, I say,
60 grand, 60 grand, Seamus Coleman,
Playing the Everton Way
