How do you make a title-winning well oiled machine like Chelsea even better? Well , the answer for Jose Mourinho might be by signing French hotshot Antoine Griezmann. The Atletico Madrid forward has been persistently linked with the Blues this summer and Chelsea have now reportedly made a formal offer for the Frenchman, which is set to be snubbed by the Spanish club.
The Spanish giants are reportedly eyeing a whopping £43 million fee for the 24-year-old player and would not accept a cash-plus-player deal involving Felipe Luis or Mohamed Salah for the forward, as Chelsea are prepared to offer.
However , Spanish football expert Graham Hunter has chipped in with his thoughts stating that Atletico’s refusal is unlikely to have any impact on the Blues, and that they have the financial might to actually go in and sign the player this summer. He stated : “Chelsea have the power to buy him though. If they go all in they have the power to take him from a club which is more than €500 million in debt and trying to pay for a new stadium.”
Griezmann had joined Vicente Calderon just last summer from Real Sociedad and has enjoyed a fantastic debut season under Diego Someone, netting 22 goals in 37 games in the League, level with Neymar and behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Hunter further added:
“Griezmann is not pushing to get out , but the fact remains the economic power at Chelsea is such that, if they want him, they can prise him away.”
Atletico will be hoping to keep the forward at the club and try to replicate their title winning achievements of the 2013/14 season next term. However, their financial shortcomings ,coupled with a massive bid from Chelsea, could yet see their prized asset depart for pastures new this summer.
