John Stones Will Become Everton Captain – Robert Martinez

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has hailed young defender John Stones as Everton’s captain in waiting. The youngster has started the Toffees’ last 5 games and has been terrific. This has led the Everton boss to declare that the English youngster is ready to make the step up should the opportunity be presented to him.
“John Stones has been in terrific form ever since he played his first (pre-season) friendly in the USA.
“Since then he has been growing as a footballer and he is a complete centre-half.
“These days you need centre-halves who are as good in defensive duties as they are exposing one versus one situations and being good on the ball. John has gone to the next level this season.”
“He has a good core to learn from – Jagielka, Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz – and it has been beneficial having Tim Howard behind him.
“Clearly he has earned his place and his performances have shown that.”
Everton lost Stones to an ankle injury in the game against Manchester United at the weekend and Martinez has revealed that the youngster is set for some weeks on the sidelines. Everton has had a relatively poor start to the new campaign and if their fortunes are to improve, they would have to work on the youngster’s fitness.
Beyond having him fit, they also need to ensure he is kept away from the clutches of the Premier League bigwigs. With his consistent eye-catching performances, it won’t be a surprise if bids start coming for prevent this, Everton need to offer him improved terms on a new deal to ward off interest.
For the purpose of improving his game too, it is important that Stones stays put at Goodinson Park. With the Toffees, his chances of regular first team football is huge but should he move to a bigger club like Chelsea, City, Arsenal or Liverpool, he might have to settle for a place on the bench since it is unlikely he would walk straight into the first team there.
