Juventus Have Nearly Double The Titles Of Inter In Serie A

Although Italian football has experienced some peaks and troughs over the years, the country has produced some of the best club teams in the game’s history.

Italy’s top-flight, Serie A, has, at times in its history, also been one of the best domestic leagues in the world. However, which clubs have been the most successful in the history of Serie A?

Juventus (Crowned Italian champions on 36 occasions)

Juventus

The Bianconeri are by far the most successful club when it comes to Serie A titles. The team from Turin have won the Scudetto 36 times in their history.

Juventus’ love affair with winning the Italian top-flight title started in 1905 when they claimed their maiden crown. One of their best runs in Serie A came between 2011 and 2020 when the Grand Old Lady claimed the title in nine consecutive seasons.

The last of the nine titles in the run is the last time that they were crowned Italian champions.

The Bianconeri have also finished as Serie A runners-up on 21 occasions, the most of any club in the Italian top flight’s history.

Internazionale (Crowned Italian champions on 20 occasions)

Since its founding in 1908, Inter has had a habit of winning major silverware and is the second most successful club when it comes to winning the Serie A title, having recorded 20 Scudetto wins.

Not only are the Nerazzurri the second most successful club in Serie A history when it comes to winning titles, but they are also the only Italian club to have been ever present in the Italian top flight since their maiden campaign in 1909.

Although the men from Milan have produced some excellent teams over the years, their most successful run when talking about Scudettos came between 2006 and 2010, when they dominated Serie A by winning five straight titles.

The run was a joint record for the most Italian top-flight titles won at the time, but it was later beaten by Juventus’ nine in a row.

Inter’s legendary 1960s team also won three titles between 1963 and 1966 under the Argentinian football coaching icon Helenio Herrera, with star striker Luis Suarez also playing a key role in the triumphs.

Like Juventus, Inter has also experienced their fair share of finishing as Serie A runners-up, finishing second place in the Italian top-flight on 16 occasions.

AC Milan (Crowned Italian champions on 19 occasions)

Similar to Juventus and neighbours Inter, Milan is considered to be an iconic club in the pantheon of Italian football. They have been a force both at home and abroad over the years, with the Rossoneri’s title count standing at 19.

The men from Milan won their first top-flight Italian title in 1901, just two years after the club’s founding. They have enjoyed fleeting periods of success since then.

However, when it comes to winning the Scudetto, the Rossoneri’s most successful years came in the 1990s, as they were crowned Italian champions on five occasions from 1992 until 1999.

During this period, Milan was coached by legendary Italian head coaches Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello.

Along with their 19 Serie titles, Milan has also finished as runners-up in the Italian top flight on 17 occasions, second to only Juventus in the number of runners-up spots in Serie A.

Milan has also won 18 FIFA and UEFA trophies, the joint-third-highest number of any club in the history of the beautiful game. That trophy haul includes seven European Cups/Champions Leagues.

Genoa (Crowned Italian champions on 9 occasions)

The Rossoblu are considered a historic institution in the Italian game, as in their early days, they were a major force when it came to winning the Scudetto.

Genoa was first crowned Italian champions in the competition’s inaugural year, 1898. They won all their nine Italian titles by 1924 and have failed to repeat the feat in a century.

Despite such a barren run, they are still the fourth most successful Italian club when it comes to winning Serie A titles, which shows just how successful they were in those early decades of the Italian top flight. Genoa have also finished as Serie A runners-up on four occasions,

Torino (Crowned Italian champions on 7 occasions)

Although Il Toro has slightly lived in the shadow of their city rivals, Juventus, Torino is a club with a fine history in the Italian game.

Their first Italian title came in season 1927/28. However, their most successful team was undoubtedly the team of the 1940s, when they recorded five Serie A titles from 1944 until 1949. The team contained many of the Italian national team’s star players.

Unfortunately for Torino, an awful twist of fate ended their dominance in 1949, as an air crash now known as the Superga air disaster saw all of the Grande Torino team perish, as well as journalists and flight crew.

Some say the club has never fully recovered from that fateful night, which saw one of the best club teams that Italy has ever produced wiped out.

Torino did return to title-winning ways in season 1975/76, though, as they beat rivals Juventus to the title by just two points. However, that title is the last that Torino has won in Serie A.

The Granata have actually finished as Serie A runners-up more than they have as champions, as they have finished second place in the Italian top flight on eight occasions.

Bologna (Crowned Italian champions on 7 occasions)

Much like Genoa or Torino, Bologna’s glory days were distant. The Rossoblu won their first top-flight Italian title in 1925, while their last triumph came in season 1963-64.

Their most successful team was in the 1930s when they claimed the Italian title three times between 1936 and 1939. Bologna has also finished as top-flight runners-up on four occasions.

In recent decades, the club has suffered many ups and downs, including, at one stage, slipping into the third tier of the Italian game.

In season 2023/24, Bologna finished fifth place in Serie A, their highest league finish in the Italian top flight since season 1970/71, when they also finished fifth place in the table.
