Leeds United Songs: Marching On Together To I Predict A Riot, Famous Leeds Chants

The English game is full of football clubs who have added plenty to the rich tapestry of the English top-flight. One of those is Leeds United Football Club, who have enjoyed some glory days in their history.

The Yorkshire outfit is supported by a fiercely loyal bunch of supporters who give their all at home and away with songs and chants. However, what are the most popular Leeds songs?

Marching On Together

Without a doubt, the club’s most popular song is the club’s de facto anthem, Marching On Together. The song is played before all the Whites’ home games at Elland Road, with most fans joining in to serenade the team.

The song was written by Les Reed and Barry Mason in 1972 and was originally sang by the Leeds squad at the time, backed up by some supporters. It was in the UK Singles Chart for three months, with the highest position being tenth.

The song goes: “Here we go with Leeds United,

We’re gonna give the boys a hand,

Stand up and sing for Leeds United,

They are the greatest in the land,

Every day, we’re all gonna say,

We love you, Leeds! Leeds! Leeds!

Everywhere, we’re gonna be there,

We love you Leeds! Leeds! Leeds!

Marching On Together!”

We Play All The Way For Leeds United

The song was inspired by the club winning the FA Cup against Arsenal in 1972. Like Marching On Together, it was written by Les Reed and Barry Mason. Reed was also the author of Tom Jones’s ‘It’s not unusual’.

The song has maintained popularity ever since, with arguably only Marching On Together being more popular amongst the Elland Road faithful.

The lyrics are:

“First of all there’s the boss who’s right behind us,

He’s the one who fills our hearts with pride,

It’s a joy to us all when Big Jack has the ball,

To know that he is on our side.

There’s a red-headed tiger known as Billy,

And he goes like a human dynamo,

Mick the Mover, of course, he can work like a horse,

And Top Cat Cooper’s always on the go.

And we play all the way for Leeds United,

Elland Road is the only place for us,

With heart and soul for the goal that’s clearly sighted,

We’re out to toast each other from that silver cup.”

By far the greatest team

This is a generic song sung by many fans of English football clubs, usually when their team is playing well.

The Leeds fans are amongst those who used the song to back or praise their team during games.

I predict a riot

The Kaiser Chiefs’ song has become popular amongst Leeds fans. In fact, it became popular amongst the club’s fans soon after its release in 2004.

The band are from Leeds and was named after the former club of Leeds South African cult hero Lucas Radebe. The fans have almost adopted it as a non-official anthem; no doubt the band’s local link helped the popularity of the song.

Follow, Follow, Follow

The song was popular during Marcelo Bielsa’s days in the dugout. It is believed to have started in September 2021. The lyrics go:

“Follow, follow, follow, we’ve got the best team in the world, Bamford and Firpo, Raph and Rodrigo, Phillips the Yorkshire Pirlo”.

Like many football chants, it was slightly optimistic, as the team struggled for results in the Premier League. Their form that season led into the next campaign when they suffered relegation. This led to the exit of many of the players referenced in the song, with ‘Raph’ better than as Raphinha joining Catalan giants Barcelona.

Youth academy product Kalvin Phillips made an ill-fated move to Manchester City, where he struggled for first-team football. Maybe, in hindsight, the Leeds fans got slightly carried away with their relative success, but that’s what football is about.
