Liverpool Could Sign £120k-A-Week Arsenal Target – Gerard’s Replacement?
With Liverpool languishing in 9th place on the Premier League table, a lot of the blame has been placed on their lackluster midfield.
The English side have conceded 10 goals in 7 matches this season and pundits have accused the midfield of not providing an adequate shield for their already shaky defense.
Liverpool’s midfield is costing them dear at present, as they are missing an elite player. Luckily for the fans, several newspaper reports are claiming that Premier League heavy weights Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are planning to make bids for the German international Sami Khedira.
The German will be out of contract this summer and a bid for about 10million pounds is thought to be enough to convince Real Madrid to sell the World cup winner, who is said to want a move away from the Spanish Giants.
Currently, Joe Allen is a pivotal to the team but gets pushed around too easily, although he is mobile and always available to receive the ball, he’s defensive contribution is minimal at best.
Lucas Leiva is a lesser player than he was 2 years ago due to injury and a lack of playing time hasn’t done him any favors.
Jordan Henderson on the other hand, has commendable energy but his effectiveness in the middle of the park is diminished by his tendency to make box to box runs, even though he is the best defender in the midfield three.
His eagerness to support the forward players, sometimes leaves his team too open to quick counter attacks when he’s out of position.
Liverpool’s talisman Steven Gerrard hasn’t been at his very best for years now, due to his age, which is not helped by Brendan Rodger decision to keep starting the 34 year old in most games.
Notwithstanding his cult status amongst fans of the club, Steven G as he is fondly called, should be given a bit part role in the team, which will consequently improve his overall fitness and effectiveness.
Liverpool’s latest signing Emre Can doesn’t significantly improve the team in any particular department. The former Leverkusen man, is not the best tackler, marker or box to box player in the midfield.
Sami Khedira would be perfect for the reds, as his defensive energy would be perfect for a pivot partnership with the Englishman Jordan Henderson. Sami Khedira is an adequate defender and has the natural ability to be a competent attacker.
With Lucas Leiva succumbing to injury every season and Steven Gerrard already 34, the Liverpool midfield will need an enforcer in the middle of the park.
The reds will have competition from Premier League table toppers Chelsea, who might be looking to offload an underperforming midfielder in John Mikel Obi and acquire more steel in the heart of their defense.
Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger is also said to be in the running as well, although Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho is said to be a higher priority from the Frenchman.
Liverpool will stand a better chance in both their League and Champions league campaigns if they upgrade their midfield…and Khedira would undoubtedly represent a huge upgrade for Brendan Rodgers.
