Liverpool manager gets it wrong with ref complaint after Manchester City defeat

Following Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat against Manchester City, Brendan Rogers suggested that the referee made decisions in City’s favour because he is from Greater Manchester.

“I thought today they were horrendous in terms of performance,” he said. “We had nothing that went our way at all. I thought we never got any decisions. Hopefully we don’t have a Greater Manchester referee again on a Liverpool-Manchester City [game].”

Lee Mason is from Bolton and his younger brother played for Bolton Wanderers, leading Rogers to believe that he is more likely to give wrong decisions in City’s favour because of this.

Aside from the fact that is a barmy assumption regardless, it is important to note that Mason was the referee for Liverpool’s League Cup victory over City the season before last. Liverpool won 1-0 thanks to a penalty Mason awarded.
