Luiz Gustavo To Become A Gunner In January

Arsenal are set to reignite their interest in signing a defensive midfielder during the winter transfer and, as per reports from Germany, the Gunners are plotting a sensational move for Wolfsburg midfielder Luiz Gustavo.

Several top notch midfielders were linked to the Emirates during the summer, including the likes of Grzegorz Krychowiak, Adrien Rabiot, Lars Bender, Victor Wanyama and Marco Verratti, but the Gunners failed in their attempts to land any of these players.

Francis Coquelin emerged as Arsenal’s first-choice DM last season and has been performing superbly for the team but boss Arsene Wenger fears an injury to the French player could hinder the team’s cause for glory this season. Therefore, the former Monaco boss scoured Europe for quality midfielders but moves to sign them proved abortive.

Now that Wenger’s fear has come to pass – Coquelin picking up an injury during Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea – the North London club have turned their attention to Gustavo as they seek to fill the void that has been left open by Coquelin and also provide competition for the player.

A former Bayern Munich midfielder, Gustavo is an experienced midfield man who would suitably fit into the Arsenal’s fluid style of passing despite his knack for going in for tackles.

Coquelin is set to miss Arsenal’s League Cup tie against Tottenham during the midweek and Wenger confirmed that he does not know for how long his compatriot will be out. The 25-year old landed awkwardly after contesting for a header and subsequently injured his knee before being taken off at half-time by Wenger.

Should Gustavo join Arsenal, their midfield will become formidable as they already have classy creative players in the squad and, Gustavo would be able to come in and do the dirty work for Arsene Wenger’s side. The player’s ability to break up play and start up an attack will be of immense benefit to Arsenal who could lose Coquelin for some months.
