Man City Songs: Blue Moon to Haaland Ha Ha Ha, Famous Manchester City Chants
In the last decade, Manchester City have been one of the most successful clubs in the English game. The Citizens fans have given their fans lots to sing and cheer about in recent years.
However, what are some of the favourite Manchester City songs amongst the supporters?
Blue Moon
The song was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934. However, City fans first sang the song at the start of the 1989/90 season. The song is believed to have been first sang during the Citizens’ season opener against Liverpool.
Blue Moon is now the song that is played directly before the team comes out at the Etihad Stadium. It is arguably the most popular song amongst the city supporters and is synonymous with the men from Manchester.
Manchester City-supporting Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher even produced a special version of the song in 2011.
Lyrics
Blue moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will hold
I heard somebody whisper, “Please adore me”
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold
Blue moon
Now I’m no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper, “Please adore me”
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold
Blue moon
Now I’m no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Blue moon
Now I’m no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Ohhhh, Kevin de Bruyne
An ode to the Citizen’s legendary Belgian playmaker Kevin de Bruyne, the song is highly popular amongst the club’s supporters. The song was first sung in 2017.
Although the midfielder is less influential these days at City, when the former Chelsea star is on the pitch and produces a moment of magic, he is serenaded with ‘Oh, Kevin de Bruyne’ by the supporters.
Singing the Blues
This song is popular amongst a few football club fans besides City, including Everton. Reportedly, City fans started singing it in 1969.
The song’s lyrics are:
‘I’ve never felt more like singing the blues,
City will win, United will lose, Oh City. You got me singing the blues
[clap, clap, clap, clap]
I’ve never felt more like crying all night
City are great United are shite
Oh City
You got me singing the blues’
City till I die
Another popular song among Manchester City fans. It is believed to have been first sung by the City faithful in 1996. The lyrics go:
‘I’m City ’till I die
I’m City till I die
I know I am I’m sure I am
I’m City ’till I die’
We love you City we do
This song is another generic song sung by most fans of English clubs. City are one of the sets of supporters who sing the song, professing their affection for their football club.
Champions again, Ole, Ole
This one is self-explanatory. Celebrating their continued success, the fans sing ‘Champions again, ole ole’. Then, often repeat the chant a few times. This one is a relatively recent chant because City only recently enjoyed major success.
We are City
The song is another one popular with the fans, which goes ‘We are City, we are City, from Maine Road, Super City, from Maine Road, Super City’ This song dates back to when the club was in their former home, Maine Road.
Nananana City
The song ‘Nananana, nananana, City’ is often repeated to the tune of the Beatles’ 1968 hit, Hey Jude. This is a popular chant among fans at home and away games.
Haaland, ha ha ha
Another song dedicated to one of the team’s popular players, this time an ode to Norwegian goal machine Erling Haaland. Although a terrace chant, it has been turned into a full three-minute version, which is available on YouTube.
The song has such lines as ‘He came to us from Germany, and now he is here to win the Champions League’ and ‘He’s a blue just like his dad, and now he’s at the Etihad’ The last lyric refers to Erling’s dad, Alf-Inge Haaland, who represented City from 2000 until 2003.
Here’s to you, Vincent Kompany
The song pays tribute to former captain Vincent Kompany. Sung to the tune of the 1960s Simon and Garfunkel hit ‘Mrs Robinson’, the words are: ‘Here’s to you Vincent Kompany, City loves you more than you will know, Whoooh.’
Even after Kompany left the club in 2019, City fans continued to sing the song. They even sang the song to the man himself when he managed Burnley against City in season 2023/24 before the Clarets were relegated back to the Championship.
However, Kompany moved to German giants Bayern Munich in the summer of 2024, so the pair may meet next season in the Champions League.
