Nottingham Forest Songs: Mull of Kintyre to Forest are Magic, Famous Notts Forest Chants
Nottingham Forest has enjoyed something of a renaissance in season 2024/25, challenging for a Champions League spot in the Premier League. Of course, it’s not the Tricky Trees’ first furore into the upper echelons of English football.
In the late 1970s, a certain Brian Clough not only guided Forest to the English top-flight title but also two European Cups, among other trophies. During this time of success, the fans had plenty of things to shout and sing about at Forest’s matches. However, which are the songs most popular amongst the City Ground faithful?
Mull of Kintyre
Wings released the song in 1977, and it reached Christmas number one in the UK charts. It was the first UK single to sell two million copies across the country.
The song was first sung at Forest in the late 1970s, during the club’s glory years. The club’s fans adapted it to be appropriate for Forest. Since then, it has been played before most home songs at the City Ground before the kick-off of games.
Forest is not the only club that uses ‘Mull of Kintyre’; League One Charlton Athletic also uses an adapted version of the song at the Valley.
Forest ’til I Die
Another popular song amongst Nottingham Forest supporters. It is unclear when Forest fans first sang the song, and it is sung at many of the team’s games.
The song’s lyrics are: I’m Forest ’till I die, I know I am; I’m sure I am, I’m Forest ’till I die!
You are my Forest
This is another Forest fan’s favourite at home and away. Once again, it’s hard to track when the Tricky Trees fans first sang the song.
Sung to the tune of the classic ‘You Are My Sunshine’, the song goes:
You are my Forest, my only Forest. You make me happy when skies are grey, you’ll never notice How much I love you. Please don’t take my Forest away…(repeated)
Come on you Reds
This is an almost universal song, adapted slightly to match the club’s particular name, such as ‘Come on you Blues’ and so on. At Forest, the club’s fans sing the simple song of encouragement ‘Come on you Reds. ‘
City Ground
The song is an obvious ode to Forest’s City Ground stadium. The song begins City Ground, Oh mist rolling in from the Trent, My desire, Is always to be here, Oh City Ground…
Another song that is popular on the terraces of the stadium that the song takes its name from.
Nottingham Forest FC
This generic song is another that is almost universally used in English football by many clubs, with just the words adjusted to fit the club’s name. The lyrics go: ‘Nottingham Forest, Nottingham Forest FC, are by far the greatest team the world has ever seen’.
Forest are Magic
City Ground fans love this song. However, it is difficult to find information about when it was first sung.
The song’s lyrics are:
Forest are Magic,
On and off the pitch,
Forest are Magic,
On and off the pitch,
on and off the pitch…
We All Follow the Forest
The famous song is sung to the tune of ‘Land of Home and Glory’, and the lyrics are:
Through the seasons before us,
Down through history,
We will follow the Forest,
Onto victory,
Nananana,
We hate Derby County,
We hate Leicester, too,
They’re s*it,
We hate Sheffield United,
But Forest we love you…
Brian Clough Brian Clough
The song is a tribute to Forest’s late great former manager Brian Clough to the old ‘Cheerio, Cheerio’ chant, which fans sing mockingly when an opposition player is sent off.
