Liverpool have agreed on a deal in principle with FC Schalke defender Joel Matip, according to Daily Mirror. The reports claim that the 24-year old, who is in the last year of his contract, will move to Anfield on a Bosman transfer in summer.
The Cameroonian international has been scouted by the Merseysiders for a long time now, and he has now agreed on personal terms with the player.
Matip joined the Bundesliga club when he was nine years old and rose through the club’s youth academy. Schalke wanted the player to sign a new contract with them, but Matip was eager to try himself in a new environment.
He made his debut for the senior team in 2009 and since then he has made 177 appearances for the club.
He is a son of a German mother and a Cameroonian father and decided to represent Cameroon national team. He has made earned 27 caps for the national team.
