Picture Proof: Deal Done as Sensational Midfielder Signs a Four-and-a-half year Contract, Will Debut against Stoke This Sunday
Halfway into the transfer window Arsenal has finally decided to unleash their first January signing, Mohamed Elneny. The former FC Basel star who had been constantly linked to a move to the Emirates has signed a long-term contract with the Gunners.
According to ESPN the deal has been completed for a fee of £7 million. The 23 year old has been brought as a replacement for the injured Francis Coquelin, in the defensive midfield position. The Egypt international has had an impressive run in the Swiss top flight, and will hope to continue making an impact in the Premier League.
Arsenal drew 3-3 at Anfield last night, after which Arsene Wenger confirmed singing the player. The official announcement was made today, on all official social platforms of the club. Elneny will be available for the upcoming game against Stoke City on Sunday.
The transfer was being held up because of the paperwork and the work permit Elneny needed in order to play in England. The process has finally been completed and the fans can now rejoice over their new signing.
The club’s official website says, ‘The transfer is subject to the completion of regulatory processes. Everyone at Arsenal would like to welcome Mohamed to the club.’
Arsene Wenger confirmed the signing and said the player may debut on Sunday against Stoke. “He has joined us,” said Wenger. “We will see if he can qualify for Sunday.”
Mohamed Elneny started his professional career at the Egyptian Premier League club, El Mokawloon. The player then moved to FC Basel in January 2013 on a six-month loan in which he impressed enough to earn himself a four-year deal by the end of his debut season.
Being new to Europe, and unfamiliar with the language, his team-mate at that time, Mohamed Salah, became his translator and a friend who looked after him and made him comfortable at Basel.
The defensive midfielder has made 28 appearances in all competitions this season and scored a total of six times. This means not only does possess defensive abilities, but has a keen sight for goal too. Hopefully he’ll continue to be an integral part of the team at his new club Arsenal.
