Record Premier League Wins by Team
The Premier League is considered to be the best league in the world, largely on account of how much money there is for each of the teams to spend. It is also thought of as being so exciting because of how attacking the football that is played in the English top-flight tends to be, often seeing large margins achieved by teams both home and away.
On this page, we will take a look at the record scoreline that each of the 51 teams to play in the Premier League to date has managed at some point, taking a closer look at some of the more interesting stories that emerge from the data.
Looking at the Records
First things first, then, and a look at the record scoreline that each team has achieved during the Premier League era. If a team has won by the same margin, such as 5-0 and 6-1, we will opt to show you the match with the highest number of goals scored by the team in question. We will always put the score of the team that we’re looking at first, so if Arsenal won 5-0 away from home, say, it will still say 5-0, then at the end of the column we will tell you whether they were playing at home or on the road.
Much of the information was taken from FBRef.

Standout Matches

Some teams have not enjoyed enough seasons playing in the top-flight in order to really be able to put their foot down during matches. That is why the likes of Swindon Town’s 3-1 win and Barnsley’s 2-0 win aren’t exactly standout moments from the history of the Premier League. Meanwhile, some teams have won by the largest margin to date, which comes in at 9-0. There have therefore been some exciting games since the 1992-1993 campaign, which we’ll look at in more detail here.
Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town (04/03/1995)
Manchester United were the most dominant team in the Premier League throughout the 1990s, which is perhaps best demonstrated by their 9-0 demolition of Ipswich Town in the March of 1995. It was the first time that a team had won by such a scoreline, with United repeating it a couple of decades later. Remarkably, they were only 3-0 up at half-time thanks to a goal from Roy Keane and a brace from Andrew Cole. Cole scored a second-half hat-trick to walk off with five to his name, whilst a Mark Hughes brace and a single from Paul Ince saw 9-0 on the scoreboard.
Manchester United 9-0 Southampton (02/02/2021)
In some ways, the win over Southampton that the Red Devils secured in 2021 was the least impressive of all of the ones on the list, simply on account of the fact that it was played behind closed doors because of the world situation at the time. There were eight different goal scorers for United, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka getting the first, Marcus Rashford netting the second and Jan Bednarek scoring an own goal for the third. Edison Cavani made it 4-0 before half-time, then an Anthony Martial brace came, separated by a goal each for Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes prior to Daniel James scoring the ninth.
Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth (27/08/2022)
A 9-0 win for Liverpool isn’t that impressive in and of itself, given the fact that the Merseysiders are the most successful English club ever, but the surprising thing on the day was that Mo Salah had no involvement in the goals. Luis DĂaz got the first after just three minutes, adding another five minutes from the full-time whistle, whilst Harvey Elliott made it two before Trent Alexander-Arnold got the third. A Roberto Firmino brace in the 31st and 62nd minute helped, whilst a Virgil van Dijk goal at the start of the second-half was well received. Chris Mepham scored an own goal and Fabio Carvalho scored Liverpool’s eighth.
Leicester City 9-0 Southampton (25/10/2019)
When a team wins 9-0, you’d expect the goals to be shared around a little bit. You would also expect the winning team to be one of the very best in the division, but this result came more than four years after Leicester City’s title win. Ben Chilwell scored the first ten minutes in, then Youri Tielemans netted the second seven minutes later. From there, it was all about Ayoze Pérez and Jamie Vardy, who scored a hat-trick each to leave them arguing over the match ball. Vardy’s third came in the fourth minute of second-half injury time, whilst James Maddison had scored in the 85th minute.
Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic (22/11/2009)
If the Leicester City win over Southampton failed to see the goals being spread around, that was nothing as compared to Tottenham’s 9-1 humiliation of Wigan Athletic. Peter Crouch scored the first in the ninth minute, whilst Aaron Lennon got one in the 64th, David Bentley netted in the 88th minute and Niko Krancjar scored in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time. Mainly, though, this was the Jermaine Defoe show, with the diminutive striker scoring five goals in a devastating spell. Not even Paul Schärner’s consolation goal could take the shine off things for the home side.
Chelsea 8-0 Wigan Athletic (09/05/2010)
In some ways, Chelsea’s success in the Premier League era has been tainted by the fact that the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club and poured billions into it to succeed, but given they have won 8-0 twice, it feels churlish not to mention it. It was Nicolas Anelka who got the ball rolling in the win over Wigan Athletic, followed by a Frank Lampard penalty, a Solomon Kalou goal in the second-half and a Didier Drogba hat-trick. It was Ashley Cole who put the finishing touches onto the scoreline in the 90th minute for a record win for the Stamford Bridge club.
Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa (23/12/2012)
A little over two years after Chelsea’s record win, the Blues delighted the Stamford Bridge crowd once again with another victory by that same 8-0 scoreline. This time, though, it was just before Christmas, with Aston Villa handing out the presents. The home crowd hadn’t taken to former Liverpool manager Rafael BenĂtez as manager, but the Spaniard earned plenty of plaudits with this result. Fernando Torres set things rolling, then David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic had things tied up before the interview. Frank Lampard, Ramires and Oscar all scored, the former getting two, before an Eden Hazard goal rounded things off.
Newcastle United 8-0 Sheffield Wednesday (19/09/1999)
Given the date as the 19th of the ninth 1999, Newcastle United’s only disappointment will be that they didn’t score nine when they routed Sheffield Wednesday at home in this commanding victory. The Magpies had been struggling for a win in the season prior to bottom of the table Wednesday turning up, with Geordie favourite Alan Shearer netting five times to all but kill the Owls’ hopes of staying up. It was the first time that he had scored more than three in a top-flight game, giving manager Bobby Robson the perfect scoreline to kick-start the rest of the season.
Newcastle United 8-0 Sheffield United (24/09/2023)
Given the fact that Newcastle United had been taken over by Saudi Arabian owners as part of the country’s sportswashing operation by the time of this game, you’d be forgiven for pretty much ignoring the result. The interesting thing about it, though, is the fact that the Magpies have only beaten two clubs by a score of 8-0 and they both come from the city of Sheffield. Sheffield United haven’t enjoyed many Premier League seasons, with this match perhaps being a good demonstration of exactly why that is the case. They were given a right old spanking.
Southampton 8-0 Sunderland (18/10/2014)
Most of the time, when you see a club has won 8-0 in a match, you assume it is one of the top sides that has done the goal scoring. In fact, Southampton have themselves been on the receiving end of more than a few thrashings over the years. What makes the result that they managed against Sunderland all the more impressive is the fact that they only had 11 shots on target, but scored eight goals nevertheless. The Back Cats weren’t helped by the fact that their own goalkeeper scored one of the goals, to say nothing of being unimpressive for the rest of them.
Manchester City 8-0 Watford (21/09/2019)
As with Newcastle’s win over Sheffield United, so too is Manchester City’s 8-0 win against Watford tainted somewhat by the fact that the club was taken over by the nation-state of Abu Dhabi long before this win, showing that sportswashing works as long as the club is successful. Pep Guardiola’s side was 5-0 up inside the first 18 minutes, with a Bernardo Silva hat-trick helping them to the biggest win of the Spaniard’s time in charge. They were chasing down Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, but ultimately fell short as the Merseysiders won their first title of the Premier League era.
Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United (05/03/2023)
There are other matches on the table above that we might well have written about instead, but when a club spanks one of their rivals by a significant scoreline, it’s difficult to ignore. Gary Neville was feeling cocky ahead of kick-off, but social media was soon awash with images of him looking disconsolate in the commentary box as Liverpool battered his old side from pillar to post. Mohamed Salah became the club’s record Premier League goalscorer, whilst Manchester United’s brief renaissance under Erik Ten Hag was brought to a thumping close.
