The End Of Mertesacker? Arsenal To Make SHOCKING Move For £65k-A-Week CB

After being linked with both Ezequiel Garay and Kostas Manolas this summer, Arsenal are seemingly in the market for a world class defender. This has prompted rumours that one of the current quartet of central defenders at the club might be on his way out. With both the aforementioned duo not of the type you will normally associate with being second choice , either one of Lorient Koscielny or Per Mertesacker appears on his way out of the Emirates , with the German being the more likely candidate , having been the subject of interest from several clubs in his native Germany.

However, if reports in the Mirror are true , Arsenal fans are in for a huge shock this morning, with the paper linking the club with Manchester United centre back Jonny Evans. The outlet claim that the player would cost £10 million to prise away from Old Trafford.

The Gunners reportedly face competition from West Bromwich Albion for the signature of the Northern Ireland International. With the Baggies stalling over a fee, Gunners have an opportunity to nip in and lure the player to Emirates.

However, the fans have been left underwhelmed by the links to the clearly limited defender , who made a paltry 14 league appearances for United last term. If Arsenal do indeed need a new centre back this summer, they can surely do better than a player who has been injury prone and inconsistent throughout his career.

Moreover, many will feel that the options that the Gunners currently have on the bench in Gabriel Paulista and Calum Chambers are way better prospects than the 27-year-old United defender, who albeit a versatile defender, is far from the world class option Arsenal need to man the defence.

To put it simply, he is not good enough for the current Arsenal side. He is the type of signing that Wenger has been criticized of making in the past. Arsenal, who are looking to challenge for the title next season, have simply outgrown the level which Evans can be deemed good at.
