Tremendous Support Following Nouri News

Gezelligheid kent geen tijd is a Dutch phrase roughly equating to the English saying, ‘Time spent together is time well spent’. This is a phrase commonly used to excuse spending a vast number of hours chatting with friends: a happiness-inducing set of words. However, my recent interpretations of this phrase differ a bit. We must make the most of our time together, so anything we do with those close to us is righteous.

Ever since news broke that Abdelhak ‘Appie’ Nouri, Ajax’s 20-year-old midfield sensation, has been diagnosed with “permanent and severe brain damage”, a tidal wave of sorrow has washed over the football world. A club statement revealed that there is “nil” chance of recovery from the injury, one that he suffered in a pre-season friendly match just last Saturday.

Since the horrible news broke on Wednesday, there has been an outburst of support from across the footballing spectrum.

Every Ajax player joined hundreds of fans outside the Nouri family home to offer their support.

While there seems to be very little hope for Appie, it is important to remain strong. It is times like these that make us stronger as humans no matter how much they hurt. I wish everyone at Ajax, and most importantly the family and loved ones of Appie Nouri, the greatest of strength during this period of frustration and agony.
