In the last few days, there has been one report or the other in the English press about Chelsea’s potential signing of Everton’s John Stones. According to the reports, Chelsea are very keen on securing the services of Stones and have had three bids rejected for him.
Only yesterday news broke that Everton has rejected Chelsea’s third bid for the player. However, newer reports claim Chelsea’s main target for the Blues’ centre back position is in fact not John Stones but rather Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.
According to daily mail’s Neil Aston, Chelsea had made an offer to sign Varane in July but the bid was out of hand rejected by Real Madrid which has then forced Chelsea to consider other targets.
Varane who has also been linked to Manchester United and Arsenal is hands down a better player than Stones and it is understandable why Real Madrid would not want the Frenchman to leave the club, at least not now. Rated at £40 million, Varane has way more experience than Stones having played at the world cup and won the champions league.
However, it remains to be seen if Chelsea will manage to bring in a centre back before the transfer window closes especially as Everton have made it clear they are not in the mood to sell Stokes for any amount.
