Boss has given managing director approval to negotiate a deal with goalkeeper, signature expected before end of year

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will most likely be given a major vote of confidence by his club as reports have emerged that he will be offered a new contract with the English giants. Reports from quite a few of the UK’s top papers have suggested that the Belgian shot-stopper has done enough to be offered a new deal by his present employers.

27-year-old Mignolet is in the news lately, but for all the wrong reasons after his mistake allowed West Brom to score. Liverpool ultimately went on to draw the match and Mignolet was subject to a lot of criticism from the media and fans. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp however shouldered the blame for the goal as he admitted that it was he who instructed his ‘keeper to come out and claim any balls.

Klopp said, “I said to Simon at half time ‘if somebody says it is your fault, you can say it’s not true, it’s my fault’ because I want a keeper who helps. I want a keeper who comes out and tries everything, with 20 players around him; he tried but didn’t get the ball for the first goal.”
Former Sunderland goalie Mignolet has almost two-and-a-half years remaining on his present deal with the Reds but Jurgen Klopp, who is known to be an admirer of the player, is intent on tying him down for a longer span of time.

Klopp had previously said that Mignolet was “one of the smartest keepers I’ve ever had” and it seems clear that the German manager has given Liverpool’s Managing Director Ian Ayre the all clear to go ahead and negotiate a new deal with the player’s representatives.

This move from the manager seems very surprising after statistics recently revealed that Mignolet was the player who made the most mistakes directly leading to goals in the last three seasons of the Barclays Premier League. Liverpool fans will not be too pleased with this latest development even though they will be hoping that their Number One can prove them wrong.
