Liverpool Centre-back with Leave Club in Summer Following Arrival of Joel Matip

Liverpool recently announced the pre-agreement for the summer arrival of Schalke defender Joel Matip. The 24-year old will arrive at Anfield in a free transfer as his current contract with the Bundesliga club expires in the summer.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp rates the Cameroonian international very highly and sees him as his number one centre-back in the coming years at Anfield.

Liverpool legend Jan Molby believes that Matip’s arrival at the club could result in the departure of one of Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho.

“The imminent arrival of Joel Matip from Schalke in the summer will almost certainly spell trouble for one centre-back at Liverpool,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “You have to assume Matip will be the number-one choice. That’s why Jurgen Klopp has bought him, to build the defence around.

“We’ve struggled to find a partnership all season, and the question now is who Klopp will prefer alongside the new signing. He’ll have a good idea, and with our squad already well-blessed in terms of centre-back numbers, I’d not be surprised if one of Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel are moved on.”
Kolo Toure is also to set to depart as his contract expires in the summer.
