How Does Current Chelsea Team Compare To Arsenal’s Invincibles

Every follower of the English Premier League, irrespective of the club they support will agree with me that this current Chelsea squad look supremely scaring in every department of the team. With two world class goal keepers, a very solid defence, creative and combative midfield as well as a ruthless attacking line, one might be tempted to argue that this current Chelsea squad have what it takes to match the Arsenal invincible of 2004. Having what it takes to go all the way is one thing and conquering all the debilitating factors along the way is an entirely different kettle of fish.

It is surely much too early to make such statement but the prospect and possibility are there for all to see. The Premier League has grown exponentially since 2004 and the level of competition is risen drastically. This might not be in support of Chelsea’s quest for invincible. Every match is difficult in this day and age. We have already witnessed how Stroke city beat the defending champion Manchester City at the etihad. Manchester United and Liverpool also went down at home to relatively smaller teams. Last season also saw Chelsea struggle and lost vital points to smaller team while getting the better of the bigger teams. Although Chelsea has been very impressive both against the smaller and bigger teams this season so far, the sustainability of this trend will go along way to determine if this present Chelsea squad can really match the Arsenal invincible of 2004.

Should Diego Costa continue with his outstanding goal scoring streak, the chances of equalling or even surpassing the great Thierry Henry’s tally of 175 goals becomes achievable . The combination of Nemaja Matic and Cesc Fabregas can be compared to that of Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva. The pair of John Terry and Gary Cahill in my humble opinion, is a perfect match to that of Tony Adams and Sol Campbell. What the invincible Gunners had in Robert Pires can be seen in Eden Hazard and the relentless spirit of Ashley Cole and Lauren Mayer can be seen in Ivanovic and Azpilicueta. As the invincible have a strong hold in Jens Lehman, so does the current Chelsea team have in Courtois, and a perfect substitute in Cech. I cannot find a match to Denis Bergkamp in the current Chelsea set up, but Oscar is not a bad talent for a team to possess. The speed and persistence of Frederick Ljungberg can as well be traced in Willian.

Should Chelsea sustain and maintain the present momentum, overcome the inevitable threat of injuries and has some elements of luck especially form referees and linesmen, I am optimistic that they can match the Invincible Gunner of 2004
