Chelsea face Newcastle United in what will be the return fixture of the Dec. 6th 2014 encounter at St. James Park- a match which saw Chelsea’s unbeaten run to the season thrown into the thrash can.

Alan Pardew’s Newcastle were the winners on the day after handing Jose Mourinho and his impressive boys their first defeat of the season in all competition. Chelsea will look to take their own pound of flesh from the Magpies and extend their lead at the top of the table even as the gap that once existed between them and their rival Manchester City is all but fizzled out.

No African Duo: African duo of Papisse Cisse and Cheik Tiote will be out of today’s action as both are away to represent their national side in the AFCON 2015 tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

Senegalese Papisse Cisse has always been a torn in the flesh of Chelsea’s defence. Always coming up with a goal every time the two sides meet. His absence will be a huge relief for the likes of John Terry and Cahill who will find it relatively easy to deal with Ayoze and Ameobi.

Cisse is the leading scorer for the club this season and his absence will be greatly felt. He came in as a half time substitute at St. James park to score two crucial goals that all but ended the Blues unbeaten run in the league.

Ivorian Cheik Tiote will also be a big miss for Caretaker manager John Carver as the midfielder is a beast on his day. His defensive astuteness in midfield area has helped Newcastle a great deal in curtailing opposition attacks so far this season and in seasons gone by.

No Room For Slip ups: When both sides met earlier in the season, Chelsea were six point clear off the closest rival Manchester City in the League table. The 2-1 loss to Newcastle, the draw to Southampton and the humiliating 5-3 loss at White Heart Lane will mean the gap has fizzled out and Chelsea are currently level of point with City.

A slip up in this game will see Chelsea throwing away their lead at the summit of the table- a scenario the players and coaches alike will not want to entertain.

Chelsea are all aware of the importance of this game especially coming after a league defeat to Tottenham. They will be all out to get the maximum three points in this game.

Jose’s Record: Jose Mourinho has a 100 percent record against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge. Both in his first spell the club, Jose Mourinho has always taken the maximum point against Newcastle when they visit the Bridge.

And just as history tends to favour Newcastle anytime they face Jose Mourinho’s team at St. James Park, it does the same for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea anytime Newcastle come calling at the SW6. Expect Chelsea to take the full point in this one.

No Alan Pardew: To a greater extent it is Alan Pardew who knows how to play Jose Mourinho than just Newcastle. The manager has however left the Magpies for a role at Crystal Palace.

There will be a bit drop in confidence for Newcastle as Alan Pardew always knows how to fire his team up anytime they face Chelsea. It is yet to be seen if caretaker manager John Carvers will be able to work same magic on his team but this game against Chelsea will be coming rather too earlier for the manager’s magic to really have much effect.

The manager has not started too well either. Drawing lowly rated Burnley and losing to Leicester City in the FA cup will not be the best of starts for any manager and playing against Chelsea will surely portend a greater test for the manager.

Newcastle’s Form dip: After an impressive run of form at some point in the league, Newcastle have seen their form take a plunge, winning just two out of their last eight league games.

They have also lost four successive matches away from home in all competitions. This is not the sort of form you take to a team like Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have made Stamford Bridge more or less a fortress, with a 100 percent win in the league at SW6.

Chelsea have also kept the highest number of clean sheets at home and have also conceded the least number of goals at home. This all but makes it less likely for Newcastle to take anything out of this game.
