Premier League giants Arsenal and their London rival Tottenham have suffered a big blow after one of their top targets – Atletico Madid forward Jackson Martinez completed a move to Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande.

The Colombia international has struggled to replicate his FC Porto form for Atletico Madrid scoring just 2 goals in 15 Primera Liga matches.

Martinez inked a four-year-deal with the Chinese Super League club and Evergrande called him “world class” and used the English appellations “fox in the box” and “goal poacher” to describe him in their Chinese-language statement.

Guangzhou Evergrande set a new record for the highest fee paid by a Chinese club (after signing Martinez from Atletico at £32 million).

Before Guangzhou Evergrande came to set the new benchmark by signing Martinez, Jiangsu Suning had set a new record last week by signing Ramires from Chelsea for £24.2 million.

Martinez will play for former Brazil and Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari at his new club.

Guangzhou Evergrande lead Shanghai SIPG at the top of the table in the Chinese Super League.
