La Liga Star Defender Arrives Manchester United Training Complex, Chelsea Wanted Him

Much has not been heard about the future of young defender Guillermo Varela who spent last season on a season-long loan at Real Madrid Castilla.

Varela has now returned to England and joined Manchester United’s first team training for the new campaign.

Brazilian right back Rafael Da Silva left Old Trafford for a new adventure in the French Ligue 1 with Lyon last week, leaving new signing Matteo Darmian and right winger turned right back Antonio Valencia in the right back role in the team. The belief now is that Louis van Gaal may be looking to make Varela a first-team player as he can be a back-up to Darmian – who impressed in his official debut for the Red Devils against Tottenham in the Premier League curtain raiser on Saturday.

Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane, now coach of Real Madrid Castilla showered praises on the young Uruguay Under-20 star during his spell in Spain, meaning the 22-year old right back has got potentials.

Varela signed for United in June 2013 for a reported fee of €2.8m, becoming the first player to arrive Old Trafford under David Moyes’ reign. He was then farmed out on loan in 2014 to Los Blancos Castilla, making 33 appearances for the Spain-based club before now returning to England.

What plans van Gaal has for the defender and how he intends to utilise him is left to be seen.
