Manchester United ON The VERGE Of £12.9 million

Manchester United are set to announce the capture of Torino fullback, Matteo Darman after parting with a reported £12.9 million according to reports. The Italian who has been a formidable part of the setup at the Italian club will be seen as another attempt by Man United to solve their teething defence problems which saw them miss out on the league title in this just concluded season.

Should the diminutive Italian make the switch to United, there is no gainsaying the fact that United will be able to mount a title challenge that should see the push Man City and Chelsea for the title. Van Gaal who was accused of having left footed defensive players in abundance with a natural right footed player absent will be looking to correct this accusation.

With comparison to Paolo Maldini, Matteo is versatile and can play on both flanks which means, Van Gaal will be looking to exploit this to the fullest. With injurires suffered at the back last season, Van Gaal would now have the option of playing Matteo at either end of the pitch. Given the injury woes of Da Silva, this acquisition would see United not facing crises in their defence.

The drafting of Valencia into the role of wingback might have been regarded as some as a stroke of masterpiece but there were times Valencia struggled and it was evident. Of course this is in no way an attempt to discredit his efforts, however, a natural right footed fullback would have been able to combine both attacking duties and defensive duties very well. There were moments when while attacking through the right, Man Utd were exposed and were punished severely due to Valencia’s inability to track back and defend.

With Matteo’s signing, United will first, be freeing Valencia from his makeshift position back to his wing duties. Should Van Gaal then decide to line both Valencia and Matteo in the same team, Valencia will look to fall back and hold position down for Matteo. The interlink play between both players will be a joy to behold and many a team will run afoul of the attacking prowess both players will constitute during play via the wings.

Reports available to us also indicate that United will be hoping to unveil Memphis Depay and at the same time they will be looking to drive through the signing of Morgan Schneiderlin. With these names, United appear to be building a team for the present and an eye at the future.
