Stanway eyes trophy haul after penning new Manchester City deal

Manchester City striker Georgia Stanway penned a new deal with the Women’s Super League leaders — and then confirmed her ambition to collect as many trophies as possible for the club.

England ace Stanway, 20, who has bagged 15 goals this term, has signed on until 2022 after joining the club in 2015 from Blackburn Rovers. She has since helped the club collect five trophies bit she is happy to admit her desire is strong to collect many more.

She told the club’s official website: “I’m only young. I’ve got patience and time on my side but I’m ready. Whatever happens, happens. Over the past eight months, I’ve shown what I can do. Whatever I do now potentially might not make a difference because the decision might have already been made but I can keep pushing.

“There’s still a lot to play for. There are trophies to be won at the end of the season and I want City to be lifting them so I’ll be pushing for that and hopefully, we’ll end on a high. By the end of my career, I want to have won all the trophies by any means necessary. We’ve won quite a lot in England already but we need to win the Champions League and the World Cup.

“On a personal level, I’d love to get recognised for the Ballon d’Or. It’s such a prestigious award and only the best get there so that’s something I’d love to do. This is where I feel at home and this is where the majority of my development has happened, and how I am the player I am today.”

City boss Nick Cushing is a big fan of his star’s desire, adding: “Georgia has shown her potential as a player, but more importantly she has shown that she has the drive and determination to keep improving.”

Stanway could yet be part of a treble-winning side this campaign, with City having already captured the Continental League Cup and reached the FA Cup semi-final in which they will play Chelsea.

And she has spoken fondly of her association with the club since she made her debut aged just 16. She added: “It’s amazing. I’ve been here for four years already and I’ve loved every single minute. To be here to stay is a massive achievement and I can’t wait to get going again.”

She adds that City is where she feels at home and where the majority of her excellent development has taken place. She continued: “I’m in the best possible position to move forward and I’m happy here. I love the environment and the fact everyone has each other’s back, supporting, but at the same time, it’s so competitive.

“You’re never securing your spot – someone’s always chasing – and that’s what people thrive off. That’s the environment we create and I love it. Day in, day out, it’s like coming into Disneyland and to spend every day here is unbelievable. I’m just so looking forward to the future.”
