Following United’s signing of Anthony Martial from AS Monaco on transfer deadline day, many were quick to question the judgment of Ed Sherwood for getting the 19 year-old at such heavy price. Martial presently holds the record for the most expensive teenager in the transfer market all over the world following the move, and not many saw him living up to the hype surrounding his transfer.
However, following a great goal on his debut in the match against Liverpool, impressive displays and an unusual calmness in front of goal, and an instant call up to the French national team, many are beginning to see why the 19 year-old is worth the price.
The press back home in France never really saw Martial as the purported Thierry Henry heir during his time at Monaco. But they have now admitted that he has surpassed all expectations and United have indeed gotten themselves a ‘supersonic’ talent. The teenage sensation put up a great debut for Les Bleus, and will no doubt be looked upon as the team hopes to win the Euros next year on home soil.
Coach Bruno Genesio, who worked with Anthony at Lyon has tipped him to be as great as Benzema who was also a Lyon product. In Bruno’s words,
“He has the potential to make a career like Benzema. But this is only the beginning.”
Martial became the youngest player to ever feature for the France national team, a record once held by Benzema. The French press believes with the help of Didier Deschamps and Louis Van Gaal, the young man will go on to become one of the best players of his generation.
