Five Players Chelsea Could Sign To Redeem Their Season

The Blues have been dishing out below-par performances this season, and they fell to their fifth defeat – in the Premier League this season – to West Ham United on Saturday.

With their title defence now in tatters, Chelsea fans know what can save their side from further humiliation this term is the injection of suitable January recruits and, the fans are keen to know who these signings would be.

It appears the next few weeks could be crucial for Chelsea, who are also in danger of missing out on next season’s Champions League qualification, as they are currently mired in 15th position in the Premier League.

And this means the Blues MUST strengthen their frail team, as the current champions of the Premier League are now chumps.

Therefore, we have selected five players who could be arriving at Chelsea in January;

1. Ezequiel Lavezzi

The Paris Saint-Germain forward could be on the move in January, if the Paris outfit want to recoup any fee on the Argentine. Otherwise, they could lose Lavezzi for free at the end of the season, with Barcelona rumoured to be keen.

But Chelsea could beat Barcelona to the signing of the former Napoli man with the promise of regular game time. Lavezzi, 30, has endured limited playing time at PSG, especially with the arrival of Angel Di Maria from Manchester United in the summer.

The bearded winger will not want to continue a bench role at the Nou camp and the Chelsea offer could prove irresistible.

2. Marquinhos

After trying and failing to lure PSG defender Marquinhos to Stamford Bridge in the summer, Chelsea could reignite their interest in the Brazilian ace as they may be well equipped to land him now.

The French outfit blocked Marquinhos’ move in the summer as they was not enough time to find a replacement, but with the player playing second fiddle to countrymen David Luiz and Thiago Silva at the heart of PSG defence, Marquinhos could jump at the chance to be a starter at Chelsea.

The Blues’ defence – which used to be one of their major strengths – has now become their Achilles heel this season, having shipped in 19 Premier League goals already. Hence, the introduction of Marquinhos could change things for good.

3. Ruben Neves

The Porto midfielder has been one of the brightest players in Europe this season and Chelsea are one of the clubs interested in the Portuguese footballer – who made history in the Champions League recently by becoming the youngest captain in the history of the competition.

He featured for Porto when they beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Estadio do Dragao in their second CL game this term.

Arsenal and Liverpool have also been linked with the defensive midfielder, but Mourinho’s links in Portugal could work to Chelsea’s advantage in luring the 18-year old to west London.

4. Marko Grujic

Although he is unlikely to break into the first team under Jose Mourinho now, reports claim Chelsea are frontrunners for the Red Star Belgrade midfielder. The Blues will reportedly ship Grujic back to Red Star upon signing him.

Chelsea’s strong relationship with Red Star will help them clinch the signature of “the next Matic” ahead of Manchester United who are also interested.

5. Andriy Yarmolenko

Mourinho was present at the Ukraine versus Spain game during the last international break and, reports claim the Chelsea boss was watching Yarmolenko. The self-proclaimed Special One has since denied that, though not convincingly.

The Dynamo Kiev forward has been targeted by several European giants but the Blues hold the trump cards in the race for the Dynamo number ten.
