United News Round Up – Surprise €27m Deal For World Semi Finalist Done, Luke Shaw Injury Update
Basking in the euphoria of trouncing Liverpool 3-1 in a Premier League game last weekend, Manchester United travelled to the Netherlands to tackle PSV Eindhoven in their first game of the Champions League campaign this season, but their absolute delight turned to a sullen mood as they were defeated 2-1 by the Dutch outfit.
Louis van Gaal has successfully steered the Man United ship back into Europe after a year absence, but the Red Devils fell to a defeat at their first attempt and their evening was even made worse following Luke Shaw’s injury on the night.
The England international left-back was stretchered off with a double leg fracture after a tackle from PSV’s Hector Moreno.
However, the Mancunian Reds now have to turn attentions to the tricky trip to Southampton on Sunday and that has brought up rumours about team selection for the clash with Ronald Koeman’s side.
Here is the latest on all the transfers and news around Old Trafford:
Former Manchester United centre-back thinks Paul Pogba has what it takes to win the Ballon d’Or and admits that the Red Devils made a mistake by letting the Juventus’ star leave Old Trafford in 2012, after failing to gain a shirt under Sir Alex Ferguson. Pogba has now emerged as one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe at just 22, and the France international has won the Scudetto in all of the seasons he has played for the Bianconeris [via the Daily Express]
Meanwhile, Luke Shaw is expected to have a second operation on his leg on Friday, as per the Guardian. The former Southampton left-back was taken to the St Anna Ziekenhuis hospital on the outskirts of Eindhoven on Tuesday night after reportedly breaking his right leg in two places. Shaw broke his tibia and fibula following a hard tackle from PSV’s Moreno in the 15th minute of the game. Two orthopaedic surgeons and a trauma specialist conducted an operation on Shaw’s leg. He is set to undergo another operation on Friday as part of his recovery.
Shaw will now remain at the hospital in Eindhoven until the Man United supremos decide that he leaves. The Guardian say that United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward visited the 19-year old this morning and the player’s parents are also understood to be with him.
Manchester City midfield maestro has place United skipper Wayne Rooney in his list of top five players in the world. The giant Ivorian was asked to named his top five best footballer on planet, before the Champions League clash with Juventus on Tuesday, to which Yaya responded with Rooney, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Sergio Aguero. New recruit from Monaco, Anthony Martial was close to not making his full debut for Manchester United in the Champions League game on Tuesday. The 19-year old was still inside the team’s hotel as the bus was about to depart, before other players realised Martial was not on board.
PSV have claimed United agreed a fee of €27m to sign Memphis Depay during the summer, not €36m. This will seem kind of surprising, as many thought Depay arrived Old Trafford for a heftier amount.
Lastly, David De Gea has a £35m release clause inserted in his new contract with Man United, and not €40m. The Spanish goalkeeper was massively tipped to join Real Madrid this past summer, but De Gea ended up staying at Old Trafford, and penned a new four-year deal.
