Wenger Told To Break Arsenal Transfer Record On £120,000-A-Week UCL Winner, Arsenal Fans Will Be Happy

Having failed to sign an outfield player during the summer transfer market, Arsenal and Wenger where tongue lashed and now Paul Merson has lent his voice to Arsenal transfer dealings as he believes the Gunners should have offered a whopping sum for Benzema, according to Sky Sport.

Benzema was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal from the inception of the transfer market but the deal failed. Bar Petr Cech from Chelsea, Arsenal didn’t add any outfield player to the dismay of their supporters.

Arsenal started the season on a disappointing note – they lost at home to a lowly rated West Ham and that compounded the backlash for Wenger and his men. Meanwhile, the Gunner have recovered and are currently sitting a-top second position on the log.

However, former footballer turned pundit claims Wenger transfer tight-purse policy was the major reason why Arsenal couldn’t lure Benzema to the Emirates.

“Why have Arsenal finished that many points behind Chelsea last season and only signed a goalkeeper?” asked Merson. “They should have gone for Karim Benzema. Arsene Wenger in the summer compared Olivier Giroud to Benzema, but the Real man would get more goals.

“He should have put in a bid for £70m, and if he didn’t want to come then so be it, but at least Wenger could have shown his ambition to the fans.

“Wenger sees what players are worth and doesn’t want to pay more, but modern football is clubs demanding more than a player is worth. You don’t get players for cheap anymore.”

For Wenger and his men, they are currently basking in the ambience of Ozil and Sanchez’ form. Should they have signed Benzema, he would become the third player to join Arsenal in recent time – Ozil and Sanchez were marquee signings from the La Liga.
